We’ve been BOWL’D over and a giveaway

Dinner in Jozi is an enjoyable outing that serves as both a functional (a girl needs to eat, but who wants to cook in 2019 right) and enjoyable experience (the presentation, the taste profiles, need we say more). We visited a trendy little spot, nestled in the heart of Sandton, that offers itself as a restaurant and venue for sundowners, accompanied by an inviting blue pool, DJ’s and the who’s who of Sandton frequenting this spot. Does Bowl’d live up to the hype? I went to find out for myself….

I started off my experience by ordering a pink G&T, you know the G&T has been made right when it’s smooth and refreshing, like a hot Summers day, which it was.

We then paged through the menu, which offers breakfasts, vegan and vegetarian, fish and meat, Dim Sum, Sushi, and desserts. There’s literally something for everyone. A distinguishing feature of this menu is that it doesn’t show prices in numbers as a traditional menu would. It shows you several bowls next to the dish. 1 bowl = R40

This was quite a refreshing take, in a suburb that’s always trying to impress, Bowl’d managed to deliver on showing us something we’ve never seen before.

Dr. Bae and I opted for a sushi starter, I had the caterpillar California roll – Cream cheese, tempura prawn, avo, rice, deluxe sauce eel sauce (R80 for 4pc).  The sushi was fresh, looked beautiful and was scrumptious, but I went for a safe option and could’ve been a little more adventurous. Dr. Bae tried the summer calamari – flash-fried baby calamari, watermelon, radish, wild rocket, balsamic vinegar (R120). This salad was sensational, it was packed full of flavour and very moreish.

The food arrived quickly, it was well presented and the ingredients were fresh and tasty, our drinks were topped up, and the waiters were attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and made recommendations according to our taste profiles and budget. Service is always a big determining factor for me as to if I’ll go back to a restaurant. In a city that boasts a restaurant on every corner we are spoilt for choice, Bowl’d have trained their staff well and they know the menu like the back of their hand.

For mains, I was a little more adventurous and tried out the prawn curry – prawns, coconut, ginger, lemongrass, fresh basil and black rice (R200). This curry was beautifully presented, pleasantly aromatic, light and yet filling, all at the same time. It packs some heat and flavour and it’s something I would go back for.  Dr. Bae opted for the ribeye steak – beef ribeye on the bone, potato chips, red coleslaw, porcini mushroom sauce (R160), the ribeye was as soft as butter and packed full of flavour, I don’t know what they did to this meat to get it so tender but they need to keep doing it.

The owner George came and chatted to us to tell us all about their vegan and vegetarian options (his personal favourites) as well as to inform us that DJ Kimmy K would be playing at a pool party; they were having that weekend. He was very accompanying and took us on a full tour of the premises after our meal.

We were too full for dessert, although we did note the Sally Williams ice cream bar and some other menu options such as the chocolate pumpkin fritters, lime leaf crème brulee and the baked matcha cheesecake.

Bowl’d attracts an eclectic mix of individuals from businessmen and their briefcases, socialites and their botox buddies and couples looking to try out a new date night spot. Their fresh menu attracts a range of people, to accompany their wide menu selection.

After our meal we explored the premises, it’s a lot bigger than you think, other than the restaurant there’s a balcony, private dining rooms, cigar lounges, conference rooms and apartments upstairs. So, next time you’re looking for a new restaurant to try out, pop into Bowl’d at the Masingita Towers in Sandton. Remember to come past for cocktails, canapes and pool parties on a Saturday arvi too.

To answer the question, did this restaurant live up to the hype, it’s easy to say that we were Bowl’d over.
