A lot has been said (a lot!) about what it takes to be successful. There’s the “work smarter, not harder” school of thought, there’s the “do what you love, and success will follow” philosophy and so it goes. But is there truly a recipe for success? Or, more importantly, one that can be replicated?
There is likely to be as many answers as there are successful people, which is why it is interesting to get the view of one successful woman. Today we’re shining the spotlight on Keletso Mpisane, head of digitally-based car insurer MiWay Blink. At the age of just 36, Mpisane is taking the insurance industry – traditionally a very male-dominated sector – by storm with her passion, expertise, and level-headed approach to both work and life.
We asked her to share her version of success in five points.
Find your purpose and be true to yourself
In my experience finding your purpose goes hand in hand with what you’re passionate about and what you’re good at – it’s because you’re naturally interested in it.
Make sure that what you want to excel in gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Purpose is the sense of meaning and direction that guides you to do what matters. This is a powerful motivator that can help you achieve success in your career.
Set clear and realistic goals.
Once you’ve established what you want to achieve professionally, set clear and realistic goals for yourself.
Having a vision for what you want to accomplish is an important first step. Write down your short-term and long-term goals, and break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks and actions. It’s advisable to also include the advantages and limitations that could impact your plan along the way.
Also don’t forget to review your progress regularly and celebrate your achievements. Learn to celebrate small achievements to keep yourself motivated.
Seek genuine mentorship and guidance
Finding a mentor who has experience and expertise in your field can be invaluable. A mentor can offer you advice, feedback, and support, as well as connect you with opportunities and networks that are aligned with your career trajectory. You can also learn from other successful women who inspire you, and seek their guidance when possible.
But steer clear of mentors who would give you blind encouragement just to please you. Everyone has shortcomings and as much as the focus is mostly on strong points, it’s important to find ways of managing the weaker points in order to be successful. This is where genuine mentorship comes in handy.
Beware – burnout is real
We hear it all the time but it’s true – balance really is important. And key to avoiding burnout. Find the right balance between work and play – the balance that works for you and then make every effort to maintain that balance.
Manage your time and energy
Prioritise the effective management of both your time and your energy. Always organise tasks by order of importance and urgency (otherwise everything will be important and urgent, always), and avoid distractions and procrastination.
If applicable, learn to delegate or outsource tasks that are not essential or that you are not good at. Also, manage your energy by taking care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Eat well, exercise regularly, sleep enough, pray/meditate, relax, and have fun.
