Gumtree launches a mobile app with a location-based filter and more

Being six months preggers and realising that I won’t be paid during my maternity leave has left me hustling for baby deals like never before. I have been using apps such as Facebook Marketplace, and Preloved on Instagram more than I ever have before. I’ve been on the search for pre-loved cots, compactums, prams, car seats, baby monitors, mobiles and more. However, the one concern I always have is 1) Am I going to get scammed and 2) Are these people who they say they are and will I be safe to collect these items alone? Other than that, my one piece of advice is, if you see something you like, buy it quickly. I’ve lost out on two gorgeous cots and rocking chairs that were going at an absolute steal, because I wanted to think about it, instead of purchasing it then and there.

How Gumtree is addressing concerns:

South Africa’s largest classifieds site,, has launched an Android and iOS app featuring updated features designed to make navigating the platform effortless, safer, and faster. The new app automatically filters content and search results based on the user’s location, making finding the exact items they’re looking for even simpler. The app also incorporates a Profile Verification feature, designed with safety in mind, and has made its popular MFC vehicle finance option available on the platform.

Claire Cobbledick, GM of Gumtree South Africa, says the app will make buying and selling new and used items on South Africa’s largest marketplace an even more enjoyable experience. “We’re always striving to improve our customers’ experience on our platforms, and our new app is another step towards ensuring that South Africans can buy and sell items with confidence.”

Profile verification:

The apps Profile Verification feature, backed by credit information bureau XDS Solutions, provides an additional layer of security by ensuring both buyers and sellers can verify their South African ID numbers. Users can distinguish verified buyers and sellers by a badge on their profile, which indicates that they have proven their identity and can be trusted. Cobbledick says facial recognition software used during the process will ensure that fraudsters cannot use stolen ID documents, giving users the confidence of knowing that the person they’re interacting with on the app is who they say they are.

The app also gives users access to finance on affordable vehicles through its partnership with MFC, a division of Nedbank. This will give buyers peace of mind knowing that the car they want to buy has been police and accident cleared and approved for finance. In addition, buyers will know upfront in their car search that they can get trusted finance for their private vehicle sale.

The new Gumtree app is available for download on Google Play for Android and the App Store for iOS.
