We’ve all heard about botox (botulinum toxin). When we hear these words some of us automatically think plump lips (which is actually filler) and silicone boobies (which can only be done by a plastic surgeon).
That’s not the case at all. Granted I am not a doctor and I have not studied medicine. All I’ve done is research this topic as much as possible. I believe that botox, used in moderation, by a trained medical professional is a great anti-aging tool.
A bit about botulinum toxin
Botox is a toxin that temporarily paralysis the muscle it is injected into. By the muscle being unable to move for about 3 months, it cannot cause deeper wrinkles. Botox cannot remove a deep wrinkle that has already formed (only filler can do that). What botox can however do, is slightly soften a wrinkle. That’s why they’re often referred to as wrinkle relaxing injections.
That’s why people use botox as anti-aging treatments. The earlier you immobilise the muscle, the less likely it is for a wrinkle to form.
I started using toxin last year. My main area of concern was my crows feet (lines around my eyes). When I would smile, my lines would stay in my makeup and this would make me really self conscious. So I consulted a doctor about them.
The entire process took 15 mins, including the consultation. An alcohol swab was used to clean the area, my doctor then drew dots on my face with a white pencil that looked like a little eyeliner. He then injected three small sites around the outer corners of each of my eyes (6 injections in total) using 24 units of toxin. The needle they used is tiny, it’s an insulin needle and I only felt 2/6 pricks.
The needle breaking through the skin hurts a little but is totally manageable. You don’t feel the product and it’s totally pain free after that. I don’t bleed a lot or bruise easily. This is mainly because I don’t drink the evening before I have botox done. Eating pineapple pieces the day before and the day of, help too. After the injections, my face was then wiped with an alcohol swab again and then my face was sprayed with an anti-bacterial spray.
The needle pricks leave little red limps on your skin, but these disappear after about 20 mins. After botox you can’t wear a motorbike helmet, a tight cap, have a nap, do intense exercise or yoga. This is because you don’t want to apply pressure to the area and cause the product to move.
My toxin takes about 4 days before I see relaxation of the muscles, but it can take up to 14 days to see results. The skin around my eyes looks smoother and I think I look how I used to, before I turned 30. These factors all depend on how your body metabolises the toxin, how strong your muscles are and a couple of other factors. The fitter you are, the quicker your body will use the toxin unfortunately.
My results usually last about 3 months. It’s so subtle that no one else will notice it, but it makes a huge difference to my confidence and that’s all that matters at the end of the day right ❤️
