Date night review: Pigalle Village View Center

Are you in the Bedfordview area? Then I highly recommend you pop into the Village View Shopping Center for a date night treat. If you’re a fan of seafood, then Pigalle is a fine dining option you should seriously consider.

Dr. bae and I received the 5-star treatment from the moment we arrived. We were warmly welcomed and then quickly escorted to our tables. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and made some great recommendations. The evening started off with us being offered some port, which we declined and then a shot of warm butternut soup, which was a great way to warm up considering the storm that was brewing outside.

I started off the evening with some Saldahna Mussels which were prepared in a white wine velouté, with garlic and a touch of paprika (R90), the mussels were large and delicious, and the sauce was oh-so moreish. I was literally licking the sauce off the shells, when I was done with that, I lapped up the rest of the sauce with some of the warm, fresh bread rolls which accompanied the dish. Dr. bae started the evening off with the Asian styled calamari, which is flash-fried and accompanied by a Vietnamese dressing and a brinjal chutney (R110). The calamari dish came highly recommended by our waiter and it was sweet and delicious. My fiancé has threatened not to bring me back though because he’s never seen me lick the shells of mussels at a restaurant before and says he can’t take me out to nice places if I don’t know how to behave.

Some of the other starters on the menu were fresh oysters, prawn tandoori, escargot, sliced pork belly, and flame-grilled chorizo. The starters range from R78 – R120.

We ordered a bottle of red wine and a bottle of water and our drinks were always full, the crumbs on our tables were always wiped away and our plates quickly cleared as we finished our dishes. Their wine selection is extensive, and they have some beautiful bottles on offer. After starters, a zesty lemon sorbet palate cleanser was brought, and the tarte taste was super delicious.

Shellfish sizing platter

Ahead of mains, we were shown the shellfish sizing platter to show the size of the shellfish available on the day. This was most impressive as I saw some of the biggest shellfish I’ve ever seen before in my life. At this point, we ordered our mains. I had the Mozambique prawn curry, a flavorsome mild curry, with coconut milk and coriander (R245). The prawns were really big and full of flavor, they were super juicy, and the sauce was absolutely magnificent. This was a mouth-watering dish that I would order again and again. I like that the curry really was mild like they said it was, it was packed full of flavor and was an absolute treat to devour. Dyll had the balsamic fillet, with mash, wilted spinach, caramelized baby onions, balsamic reduction and port wine jus (R235). The fillet was as soft as melted butter and yet each piece was an explosion of flavor in your mouth. This fillet is a big win in my book and something I’ve ordered several times before and would order again and again and again.

In terms of shellfish mains, you can expect to see the likes of 600g lobster (R495), Kingklip fillet nacional (R250), and baragoul line fish fillet (R195). On the grill side, you can treat yourself to 300g beef fillets (R220), confeit duck (R275) and lamb cutlets (R245). There’s something for vegetarians too, with mushroom ravioli, wild mushroom risotto and south Indian tomato dhal for between R145 – R160.

For dessert, we opted for the crème brulee (R75). It was magnificently presented ad tasted like an absolute dream. Other options were malva pudding, lemon tart and cheese, and biscuits to name a few, the desserts were priced between R75 – R85

While not a cheap night out, Pigalle is perfect for a celebratory experience, such as your blog turning 2 years old!! Yay, I am already itching to go back. If Bedfordview is a bit far for you, they also have a branch in Melrose Arch and Sandton. Oh, and before I forget, this branch is equipped with a private dining room, which makes it perfect for intimate gatherings too. Have you been to this restaurant before and would you go back?
