Date Night Spot: Voodoolilly Cafe

This weekend Dr. bae and I won a competition on Facebook to stay at One Hyde Park. A little staycation in a beautiful setting is always welcomed, it’s a great way to re-energize and get the creative juices flowing. One Hyde Park is a group of luxury apartments, while they have a gorgeous health cafe called Honest, it’s only open for breakfast and lunch. So, we decided to venture down the road to Birdhaven to try out Voodoolilly cafe after we heard it had been re-launched earlier this year.

This owner-operated restaurant was exactly what we felt like on a cool, Friday evening. They offer homely, well-priced meals. We started off the evening with peri-peri chicken livers and toasted challah (R68). The peri-peri was pretty spicy so my fiancé was in heaven. I, however, felt like a fire-breathing dragon after one bite. I had the toasted challah with cashew cream cheese and wild mushrooms (R78) it was so well seasoned, delicious and oh-so moreish, I wanted to order more but Dr.bae wouldn’t let me. How rude, I know.

For mains, Dr. bae had a saucy prego steak roll (R94) this prego was delicious! The sauce was made with white wine, butter, chilli, olive sauce, on a Portuguese roll with a side of fries. I had the chicken coconut curry (R105) with steamed rice, Sambals and poppadoms. They were very generous with the chicken pieces, and the curry was really mild (like I asked for). I will definitely be back. They bought extra challah for me to lap up the sauce and the chef came out to assure us that the meal was made with love. It’s not often you get personal touches like this anymore, so this was a welcomed treat.

Our server, Fortune, was knowledgable about the menu and made some great recommendations. Their lunch and healthy drink options looked outstanding too and the decor was really sweet! They have a Hendricks mosaic bar and a Lilly made up of hundreds of tiny pics. I’m organizing a girls’ breakfast for next week as their breakfast options look too delicious, not too.

The ambiance is relaxed, with dimmed lighting, perfect for a first date, or a family dinner, or in my case, a date night with Dr. bae. It’s also great that you can have a conversation in the restaurant. The food came out quickly, it was well seasoned and full of flavour and I can’t wait to come back.

Have you tried Voodoolilly Cafe in Birdhaven?
