So a few years ago we all did the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness for MS, we then did the makeup-free selfies to raise awareness around breast cancer, then the cinnamon challenge where we all inhaled cinnamon and nearly died (fun times) and now there’s a challenge with a cause, the #ChilliChallenge! This is why you need to get on board…
What is the #ChilliChallenge?
As temperatures are starting to drop, we are turning on our gas heaters, purchasing the cutest unicorn water bottles and looking stylish in our new winter coats, or having a meeting with your tax practitioner in your snuggly tracksuit today like I did (benefits of working for yourself), Many South African’s are living below the bread-line and cannot afford such luxuries as hot water or blankets, Some, don’t even have a roof over their head.
Johannesburg has an estimated 8k – 20k homeless people, and Cape Town has about 5k homeless people. That alarming statistic is a harrowing reminder that we must provide the homeless and poor with support throughout the year, but more so during the cold winter months. It really breaks my heart that so many have so little.
Brand Hubb has decided to raise money to purchase and donate 2000 or more blankets to organisations that help the less fortunate across the country for the month of July.
“Many people don’t realise that something as small as a blanket can make a huge difference to a person who has very little. As a business, we are always looking for ways to give back to people and we are inviting corporates, agencies, and individuals to help us by donating a monetary contribution towards the cause. We hope that by providing the disadvantaged with blankets, we can play a small part in aiding those who need it most during these cold months”, says Rob Anderson, Founder of Brand Hubb.

The campaign has a social media drive to it as well – the #ChilliChallenge, created to help garner more attention online.
Watching a person eat a chilli is amusing and quite literally ‘brings the heat’, making it an ingenious way to help raise awareness for the campaign online. Brave participants are encouraged to post videos of themselves eating a chilli and then nominate their friends to do the same with the hashtag #ChilliChallenge. There are also daily prizes available to win to the value of R200 000 within the month of July for those who participate.
The second part of the campaign is to donate to the cause via the Brand Hubb website, where thereafter quality thick 1,5kg blankets will be purchased and distributed.
“The Chilli Challenge is a great way for us to build social awareness, rooted in the spirit of giving back. We want to grab people’s attention in a way that makes you realise that there are thousands of people who are in need of warmth this winter. We are proud to be the organizers of this initiative”, concludes Anderson.
