Date Night Spot: Signature Morningside

In today’s busy world, it’s really important to make time for your significant other. It’s so easy to go to work, gym, cook, watch TV and go to bed. It’s easier than you think to get stuck in a rut. Which is why Dr. Bae and I try to enjoy a date night at least once a month, more often if we can. This can at times be easier said than done.

I share our date night experiences with you as much as I can, in the hopes to inspire you to enjoy date nights of your own. Weather they’re with your girlfriends, lover or family members, date nights are important to have.

I also love reading about other people’s experiences at restaurants and I enjoy seeing what they ate, so I hope you enjoy this aspect too.

A review I’d like to share (that’s long overdue, as we went there on 13 Feb) is Signature restaurant in Morningside Shopping Center. This restaurant is a real date night treasure, based in a secure shopping center. Friendly waiters welcome you into a beautiful upmarket venue, with live entertainment welcoming you in and playing in the background throughout dinner. It was so lovely being serenaded while you enjoy scrumptious morsels, perfectly prepared by some of the best chefs in the country.

What you can expect from Signature, well it’s all in the little details. They pull out your chair for you, they place your napkin on your lap, they open the bathroom doors for you. My experience was ultra luxurious and I felt like I was someone really important. I think this is how Kim Kardashian feels every day. The truth is that they treat everyone like this. So if you’re having a bad day, or if you’ve got something awesome to celebrate, Signature restaurant will make for a great night out and it’s sure to increase your mood.

Onto the food:

Starters:

I opted for what I know and ordered the salmon tartar. This stater was a tian of Scottish salmon, tomato concassê and pickled cucumber beetroot carpaccio and champagne foam (R160). It was everything you expect salmon tartar to be. It was fresh, well seasoned, had a bit of a citrus / acidic component and was ultimately ultra decadent. This is a lovely light starter to ease into the evening.

Dr.bae was his usual adventurous self. He went with the poached lobster. Butter poached lobster tail stuffed with mild curry lobster mousse, beetroot lobster sausage meat, pickled beetroot salad, crispy glass noodles and beetroot gel (R170). His starter was delicious! It was so well seasoned and the curry mousse was enough to give you all the feels. It was full of flavour, hearty and delicious. If no one was watching I would’ve licked the plate. That is how good this lobster tail was. I’m going back just for this.

Mains:

I had the Beef fillet and mushroom royale. Grilled beef fillet, oxtail-mustard and cheese croquette, confit mushroom potato, mushroom royale, slow roasted and grilled pearl onions, grilled zucchini, mushroom puree (R350). This fillet was like melted butter. It really was soft, delicious and full of flavour. I don’t know how they get it like this? It was unreal. The mushrooms and croquettes were super moreish. I loved every second of this meal, my only disappointment was when it was over.

Dr. bae opted for the paradise fillet. Beef fillet grilled to perfection served with garlic snails and prawns, muesli powder, pan-fried exotic mushrooms, potato terrine, basmati rice and port wine jus (R395). Let me tell you upfront, the basmati rice is green (food colouring) so don’t be alarmed when you first see that. The garlic snails were cooked to perfection, those were a real stand out for me. am struggling to find the words to describe this meal, you have to experience it for yourself. It’s a wow, it too was utterly delicious.

Dessert:

We shared their cake of the day, which was a Ferrero Roche chocolate mousse cake. I don’t recall how much it was, sorry. It was a great way to end an evening of over-indulging. The cake, however, was nothing spectacular. It looked beautiful, and it was sweet, but something about it left me wanting more. I can’t quite put my finger on what it was though. Dr. Bae however thoroughly enjoyed it and almost ate the whole thing.

The vibe from the live entertainment created an energetic ambiance that made you want to get up and dance and it instantly put you in a great mood. Accompanied by the great staff who were knowledgeable about the menu, this was a spectacular night out. The restaurant was a little bit pricier than I remember but the starters and mains will have you coming back for more. This was money well spent!

The cherry on the cake for me was the validated parking ticket they hand you on the way out. That way you can just hop into your car and drive home. All these finer details ensured we had a romantic, sensual date and we cannot wait to go back for more. I was really impressed.

If you haven’t been to Signature before, you need to give them a visit. This is a great spot for a date night or to celebrate a promotion. You won’t regret it and the lobster tail is an absolute must try!
