Changing the world, one really cool product at a time. Following the success of the 2017 and 2018 partnerships, Elizabeth Arden
By partnering once again with their Make a Visible Difference Community Hero – Kate Senekal of Sparrow Society – in creating four brand new chic cosmetic bags for prestige retailers, Elizabeth Arden continues to provide customers with the opportunity to support this proudly South African initiative, while gifting themselves with something beautiful.
SPARROW SOCIETY “This year’s design was inspired by the intricate designs in traditional African basket weaving,” says Kate, “with added pops of colour!” “The continued manufacture of the Elizabeth Arden bags by the Sparrow Society team in South Africa has served to sustain local manufacturing and revive lost factory jobs due to increased imports flooding the local market.
Within the sustainable job creation program, Sparrow Society was also able to further empower their seamstresses with a Creative Business Course to equip them to start their own small businesses. Through partnerships like these, we hope to revive the manufacturing industry in South Africa and help to create a better and more sustainable future for all.”

Kate Senekal is the founder of Sparrow Society, a non-profit organisation which connects and empowers women in the townships of Gugulethu, Masiphumelele and Philippi through their craftsmanship, design and creative skills. A photographer by profession, Kate was motivated to give this up and follow her passion of empowering disadvantaged communities. She was inspired by the talented women she saw in townships creating “charity trinkets” for sale, and not living up to their talent’s full potential. Kate provided a platform to share her knowledge and to guide and train women in these communities to master their skills.
This empowered them to create beautiful bags, candles, jewellery and other products designed by Kate herself. Sparrow Society has grown into a proudly local brand, which is now sold through a number of South African retail outlets. Through the organisation, Kate has provided employment and a constant revenue stream for women in underprivileged communities, allowing them to not only provide for their families but to also feel empowered and respected by doing what they love.
