6 things to do before every international flight

I’m flying to Turkey in April and this got me thinking about some tips to share before an international flight. Luckily I’m flying with Emirates, they’re known for having comfortable flights, with great food and I see they also offer vegan meals now too. Regardless of the airline you’re flying with, here are some tips to ensure you have a comfortable flight.

I know most people don’t look forward to long flights. The excitement, the movies, new experiences, new foods and cultures, the flight is just the start of an exciting adventure. Whether it’s a short flight, or a long haul across the globe, there are some key steps you can take to prepare and ensure you have a smooth and comfortable journey.

Before you leave your destination…

Before an international flight, always ensure you drink at least two liters of water before climbing on board. This is to ensure you stay hydrated. When you pack your carry-on luggage ensure you have all of your essentials so you can feel as comfortable as possible throughout the flight and feel well rested when you land. Take a nice hot shower just before your flight, include a full body exfoliation and an extra thick layer of moisturizer from head to toe. Try not to fly with makeup on. Just lots of moisturizer.

Dress for success…

Always travel in comfortable clothes. Airplanes can be a bit chilly, so look at dressing in layers so you can dress up or down depending on your destination. A simple jacket and comfy scarf can make all the difference to your look and comfort and these items can be easily stored in your carry-on luggage. Try not to wear excessive jewelry, belts and hats as these can slow you down when passing through security. Personally I opt for active wear, and a denim jacket.

Stay clean….

Something as simple as tooth paste and a damp facecloth can take you from feeling sticky, to clean in 0,25 seconds. The airline usually has these on board for your comfort. I recommend taking face wipes, moisturizer, facial spritzer, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, BB cream and a hairbrush with on your flight. Using these simple hygiene products on, or after the flight can leave you feeling fresh, clean and ready to start exploring your new destination without worrying about how you look.

No booze, rather snooze…

While a little alcoholic beverage on the flight can be tempting, minimize your consumption as alcohol will dehydrate you further and make you more susceptible to falling sick. Rather opt for lots of water, a sugar free soft drink or a tomato juice. Herbal teas, without caffeine may help you sleep better, they will keep you hydrated and it may soothe your nerves if you’re nervous about flying.

Glug, Glug, glug…

Drink loads of water before, during and after your flight. I cannot stress this point enough and you’ll feel the difference in your skin and energy levels. Recycled airplane air can mess with your fluid levels. I sometimes wear a face mask for 20 mins while on a flight to put back additional moisture. I also use face oil capsules while in the air to put moisture back into my skin.

Comfort is key….

A neck pillow can be a life saver on a long flight, I always have an airmune before I fly, while in the air and once I land to ensure I don’t get sick. I also try sleep as much as I can on the plane, without taking sleeping pills. The clothing you wear on a plane can also make a big difference to how comfortable you feel when flying. Let’s be honest, no one wants to try sleep in skinny jeans.
