A hidden gem in the heart of Braam

I came across this beautiful store situated in Braamfontein a few weeks ago. The founder Lisa Storer and her team travel the world to source one of a kind pieces (fashion, accessories, crockery, travel accessories and home decor) and every item has a unique story to tell. The Storer source and curate beautiful, unique pieces that come from smaller crafters. The purchase of these pieces uplift both the gatherer as well as the maker.  Some of my new favourite pieces from the Storers new collection are listed below:

Berber backpacks:

In Morocco, the art of basket weaving is passed down through generations. Weavers use the leaves of the medittanean dwarf palm, commonly found on the southern slopes of the Atlas Mountains. The leaves are women into strips and sewn together. During crafting, small inconsistencies are formed in each piece, carrying the spirit of the crafter.

Turkish towels:

Also known as Peshtemal, Hammam or Fouta towels – they are made from Turkish Cotton, a premium cotton that has extra long fibers. Using longer fiber cotton means fewer joins, which results in stronger and smoother cotton threads. Because of this unique material, Turkish towels are known to become even softer, fluffier and more absorbent with successive washings.

Olivewood plate and bowl:

Each olive wood piece is unique as both the wood’s natural grain and craftsman skill leaves its character embedded in the piece. These pieces celebrate the beauty of raw authentic creativity.

Earrings/ Necklace:

Handcrafted in a workshop in Mexico City the tassel jewellery range is 100% raw cotton, celebrating the beauty of raw authentic creativity.

Pom Pom Sandals:

They are handmade in Bodrum, Turkey and they form part of a female upliftment project. Their focus is on empowering female artisans – prioritising mothers who work from home, home-schooling their children.

Mexican glasses:

These colourful glasses are made in a little workshop located in the mountains of Oxaca, Mexico.

For busy business women you can shop online and for the people that want to feel and look at the actual pieces, their gorgeous store is based at Shop No2, 44 Stanley, Braamfontein. “When you buy something that was made by an actual person, there is something special there and you do feel it! The consciousness with which a thing is made is often more important than the thing itself” – J Donald Walters
