Working from home? Here are 5 ways to make your space productive

Freelancers are on the rise, as millennials are constantly on the search for the ever-elusive work-life balance. Working from coffee shops or shared office spaces can start to get a bit expensive. Here are 5 ways to make your space at home more work-friendly.

  1. Routine:

It can be difficult to distinguish between ‘your’ time and your ‘work time’ when working from home. Having a routine is essential to create structure and boundaries. Have set times for planning your to -do list, reading mails, having meetings and actioning tasks. Try have your coffee breaks and lunch breaks at the same time every day to ensure you don’t crash in the afternoon. If you do break routine and work until the early hours of the morning, ensure you get enough sleep and then get back into your routine as soon as possible.

  1. Purpose:

It is important to understand what the purpose of your workspace is. Then ensure your workspace is conducive to achieving your desired results. Either way it would be advisable that you have a clear space that is functional, has everything you need to work productively and has a few small personal touches to induce creativity.

  1. Good lighting:

It’s important to work from a well- lit room, with natural light. Artificial light is never as good and will put strain on your eyes in the long run. While fairy lights and scented candles may create the perfect Instagram ambience, they’re not conducive to long periods of work productivity.

  1. Comfort is king:

Your workspace is a place where you’re likely to spend 8+ hours a day at, so ensure you have a comfortable chair to work from and a foot stool if needed as not to strain your back. A comfortable work space will ensure less distractions and movement due to aches and pains in your legs and back.

  1. Set boundaries:

It is important to set boundaries between your workspace and the rest of your home. It would be ideal if you had a spare room or office to work from. If you are working from a communal space in your home such as your lounge or dinning room table. It is important to ensure your work space is uncluttered and free distraction free. It’s not advisable to work from your bed as there needs to be clear boundaries between your workspace and your home. These boundaries will increase productivity.
