5 social media terms you should add to your vocabulary

Social media

We live in a world where influencer marketing is a part of every FMCG brands marketing strategy. With the rise of the influencer, comes a flurry of new social media terminology. Weather you’re a millennial or a baby boomer, it can be difficult to keep up with the lingo.

Let me break it down for you….

  1. Ephemeral content

Ephemeral content is content that disappears after a period of time. This content is seen mostly on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in the form of stories.

e.g. You post an Instagram story which has a limited life span of 24h.

  1. Lens

A Lens is an animated overlay effect that is used while taking a photo of yourself. The lens can animate the user’s image while in camera mode to appear as a dog sticking its tongue out or butterflies fluttering above your head.

  1. Filter

Filters are used on social media platforms as a way for users to edit their photos. Each filter offers an overlaid effect that can be placed onto images. This feature is most popularly used on Instagram. Filters are used as a way of standardising images, so they all fit within a certain ‘theme’ or to edit the way the person in the image appears.

e.g. a filter can be used to make you appear more tanned, or to edit the lighting so it appears to be morning instead of afternoon.

  1. Engagement

Engagement is any action taken by a reader on your page. This can be in the form of comments, likes, reactions or shares.

e.g. You post a status on Facebook and a reader likes it. They have now engaged with your post.

  1. Impressions

Impressions are the number of times your posts have been seen by users on social media.

e.g. If 100 people have seen your Instagram post, then your post has 100 impressions. Even if only 10 of them have engaged with your post, by liking it or commenting.

I hope this was helpful, enjoy that filter and happy posting lovelies!
