it’s a Sher thing was invited to visit Che Argentine Grill in Maboneng, Johannesburg. Nestled in the heart of this beautiful, bustling city, Che was a pleasant surprise of everyday eatery excellence. It’s simple and rustic setting, delicious menu and friendly staff makes this restaurant a must for Johannesburg residents.
We started off the evening with warm bread, accompanied by their famous chimmicirro sauce which you can purchase for R 60,00 a bottle. We washed this down with some spring water and red wine, yum!
Che Argentine grill has a comfortable setting where you can clearly see the kitchen, and the fire is always burning. You can expect to see wrought iron tables, mixed chairs and candles in empty wine bottles at this rustic venue.
Che is designed to be a place where adults can enjoy every day dinning, such as great wines and delicious food. They also offer Tango Tuesday evenings and live bands from time to time.
The staff at Che are positive, attentive and informed about their cuisine. Our waitress Anna was able to give us great suggestions on starters, mains and desserts as well as a great wine to accompany our meal too.
For starters we had empanadas (argentinean home made pies). We had the carne – minced beef, onion, red peppers and eggs and the pollo – free range chicken, onion, spices, green and red pepper. These were flavoursome and very moreish.
For mains we had the Aranita steak spider. The steak was tender, flavoursome and packed a meaty punch. It’s served with a side of your choice – we opted for mixed seasonal veggies with garlic and olive oil. The short ribs were our next choice of meals to try, they were very rich in flavour and had an addictive crispy layer of fat on them. This dish was accompanied by roasted hassel back potato cooked in white wine, butter and sage and topped with bacon.
For dessert we had home made pancakes filled with dulce de leche and served with brandy soaked pears, coffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. Our second dessert was a white chocolate and yoghurt ganache, strawberries, hibiscus and Malbec. This was the sweetest way to end a beautiful evening.
We left Che feeling full and happy. The food was delicious and the hospitality was great too.
