Everything you need to know about cupping.

I was lucky enough to be invited to Life Day Spa in Fourways by Brand Addicts, to experience ‘cupping therapy’ to help with the treatment of cellulite before I go overseas to Croatia. Firstly, a big shout-out goes to Life Day Spa Fourways, your premises are beautiful, your staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the treatments are unreal. All the celebs are talking about cupping and if you have ever wondered how cupping massage reduce cellulite, well I’m about to spill the beans!

Cupping on the leg – the liquid is the oil they apply on before the cupping.

What is cupping?

Cupping therapy massage is used to reduce the appearance of cellulite. It activates, stimulates and rejuvenates the lymphatic system with a reverse deep tissue massage technique. This massage process creates a flow of fresh oxygenated blood, causing the release and clearing of waste and toxins from the fat cells. This process breaks up and removes the cellulite look and results in smooth and toned skin. Done frequently, the improved circulation removes the “sludge” leaving the fibrous tissue soft, healthy and flexible, keeping skin looking more youthful.

The cup is made from a soft silicone which is squeezed and placed on your area of concern, after applying Genie in a bottle treatment oil. Your therapist will then drag the cup downward toward your lymph nodes so that the toxins can drain from your system. Having a headache after cupping is a normal reaction.

What does it feel like?

The massage is really relaxing, the oil is sensual, although the cupping itself is uncomfortable. It is however bearable and the benefits far outweigh the discomfort you experience for a few minutes.

Does it hurt?

Yes, it does a little bit. The back was manageable, and relaxing. I even fell asleep at one stage. I found the cupping on my legs to be quite uncomfortable. Don’t be alarmed if you see bruises on your body after your treatment, my back was a little bruised, but my legs weren’t bruised at all. The results in terms of cellulite reduction, can be seen immediately. I didn’t wake up and all my cellulite was gone (damn). However, I did notice that the dimples weren’t as deep or as noticeable as they were before. I suspect this is the kind of treatment you will need to go for regularly to see best results. I’m going for my next appointment this week. If you’re self-conscious about an upcoming summer holiday, I would recommend this treatment. It puts your mind at ease and it really does help.

I also got the Genie in a bottle oil that I apply every morning and every evening to help aid results. It’s been about a week and the cellulite is still there but still not as visible. I’ll give you a further update after I’ve been for a few more sessions.

How much does it cost?

R720 for a full body massage, including cupping on your back and legs. You can add cupping on to any massage for an additional R200 at Life Day Spa.
