Hi beauties! You read that headline right, Vagina facials are now a thing. It’s 2018 after all! What is taboo and off-limits anymore? Trump is president, every millenial guy has a full sleeve, and women are starting to have a voice. With movements like #MeToo and #MenAreTrash, women are starting to own their narrative.
I know my conservative family is going to cringe at the headline of this article, but it’s not what you think. When Grace Skin and Wellness invited me to come and experience their Vagina Facial, my first reaction was ‘I’m OK thanks!’ I mean I’m open minded and I would love to bring you all the latest in beauty and skincare innovations, but I’m not that keen on being over exposed in that way. I did some research on the topic and when I felt that I would not be over-exposed, I booked my appointment.
It’s not what you think it is. This treatment is for women who suffer from ingrown hairs and have scars on their pubic bone area as a result. Up until now, women with ingrown hairs and vaginal scarring had to suffer in silence. Luckily this is 2018 ya’ll so suffering in silence is no longer a thing.
Grace Skin and Wellness in Parkmore is investing in alternative, more natural and homeopathic procedures, as well as procedures for all the problems us women have, but never want to talk about. Their salon looks like a secret garden, nestled in the heart of Parkmore. When you walk up to the center you’re greeted by a cotton-candy pink door, and a wall of beautiful succulents. When I walked in, one of the first things I noticed was the wallpaper on the ceilings of the different therapy rooms. This is something quite different from what other salons are offering at the moment. Now you can stare at a beautiful, colourful and intricate ceiling while having your treatment or sit up and look outside to a beautiful manicured lawn of succulents and indigenous plants.
This is not the latest procedure for bored housewives with too much disposable income, I am happy to say this procedure is available able for any woman over the age of 18 who suffers from ingrown hairs. There’s no down time, so it can even be done in your lunch break.
I was a little nervous when I arrived for my treatment as I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was quickly put to ease by Lisa, the therapist I used. She asked me to fill in some paper work and then we went through to start the treatment. You’re guided to a private room, where you’re wrapped you in a towel. What I loved about Grace Skin and Wellness is that this treatment is completely external. They do not go anywhere near your naughty bits. What a relief!
She starts off by applying a cleanser and then an exfoliator to the area and then we spoke about all the other alternative treatments that they offer and what is in the pipeline and still to come! Stay tuned, some exciting developments are coming up. Lisa is very knowledgeable about her field and her passion for beauty and alternative therapies is clear, which also tends to have a calming effect. Please note that the towel is moved slightly, only to expose the area she is currently working on, which is the pubic bone. It’s best to wax a week before your treatment. A warm towel is used to remove the product from your skin and then the area is steamed to soften the hairs and open the pores of the skin.
Lisa then applied a numbing cream to the area. She uses a high-quality numbing cream which is the best I’ve used to date. She wraps the area in cling-wrap to assist with absorption and to help the cream act faster. We then began with the micro needling. This is the part I was most nervous about as I know you can bleed and it can be extremely painful, and I have the lowest pain threshold. I honestly did not feel a thing, no pain whatsoever and I didn’t bleed. I am so happy! Hygiene is their number one priority, so a disposable needling head and plastic barrier are used. The area is red after the procedure but it’s not painful or inflamed. You can literally carry on with your day.
You’ve heard of micro needling for your face, as an anti-aging means to treat wrinkles and fine lines. Micro needling your pubic bone assists with scar repair, removing ingrown hairs and it assist with rejuvenating the area. The next step was to apply a hydrating mask to the micro needled area. to soothe the skin. While the mask was soothing the area, Lisa performs foot reflexology to help your body restore some balance. The mask is then removed and a healing balm is applied, and then you’re free to get dressed and carry on with your day. The whole process takes 1 – 1,5 hours. 2-4 treatments are recommended, depending on your concerns and level of scarring.
This treatment may not be mainstream yet, but it’s pain free and it works. This is a treatment that I would recommend and something I would definitely go back for. I felt completely comfortable throughout the entire process. The treatment costs R400 a session.
Now one of my lucky readers will win her very own vagina facial. To enter follow @tamryn_sher and @graceskinandwellness on Instagram and tag a friend. The winner will be announced on Friday, 23 March at 18h00 and will be contacted via DM.
